Petyr Baelish is the head of House Baelish, and the governor of a minor holding, so small it has neither title nor control, placed in a small area within the Fingers, a seaside region in the northeastern shores of the Vale of Arryn. He is currently House Baelish’s only living member. House Baelish had infinitesimal origins and no special lineage: Petyr’s great-grandfather was a simple sellsword from Braavos, who appeared at the Vale at the behest of House Corbray. Peter’s grandfather was a common hedge knight, who succeeded to earn a lesser lordship of a few rough acres in the miniature peninsula of the Fingers. Peter’s Father fought in the War of the Ninepenny Kings, the preemptive attack on the troops of Maelys Blackfyre, the end of the Blackfyre Pretenders, before they could venture an invasion of Westeros. Removing there little known existence like a jet wash from the common peoples minds. During the battle, Peter’s father toiled well under Lord Hoster Tully. Through their genuine relationship, Hoster agreed to foster his son Peter at Riverrun, a great honor for a minor House. Peter Moved to Riverrun when he was eight years old, bearing all he kept in a bundle. At Riverrun, he joined Hoster’s daughters Catelyn and Lysa Tully. Their brother Edmure mockingly nicknamed him “Littlefinger” at the point, regarding his small height at the time and the position of his minor landholdings. The nickname would attach with him throughout his life. Eventually, even Peter sarcastically welcomed the nickname, because it showed how far he had raised, from a poor noble-born boy of an unimportant minor House in the “little Finger” peninsula of the Vale to one of the most prominent executives at the imperial court. Peter became smitten with Catelyn, but she never reciprocated his affections. Lysa was fascinated with Peter, but he only favored Catelyn. Eventually, when she was promised to Brandon Stark, heir to Ruler of Winterfell and Lord Chief of the North, Peter faced him to a duel, believing he could overcome through bravery and courage – he was immediately defeated and almost killed, though Catelyn requested Brandon to spare his life. Embittered, Peter was thrown out of Riverrun and returned to the Vale. During Robert’s Rebellion, however, Brandon was killed by the Mad King Aerys II Targaryen, so Catelyn married his younger sibling Eddard Stark while to secure a partisan alliance Lysa was espoused to Jon Arryn, ruler of the Vale. Manipulating Lysa’s obsession with himself, Peter ingratiated himself into Jon’s services, first as a customs officer at Gulltown, where he grew the port’s revenues tenfold. Seeing Littlefinger’s industry acumen, Jon was undoubtedly influenced by Lysa to carry Littlefinger later to the imperial court at King’s Landing and prepare him as the Master of Coin on King Robert Baratheon’s Small Council. Baelish’s naked hunger often set him at odds with the Master of Whisperers, Lord Varys.
